I typically hit the gym on Friday mornings (going 2-3 times a week), and this morning I had an excellent workout. We’re quite an active family, and I try to do something active at least once per day. I also try to vary the sports a bit from day to day – either weights at the gym, ice hockey (my favorite!), hiking, mt. biking, swimming, rock climbing, and in the winter snowshoeing, cross country skiing or ice skating.
Being quite active I find that I eat a lot! I try to be conscious of what foods will help fuel a workout or activity, and what foods will help me recover from them more quickly. I say that I try, because it doesn’t always happen that way! A great source of inspiration and information is Brendan Brazier’s book “The Thrive Diet”, which talks about using plant-based foods for optimal sports performance. I think I need to read it over a few more times, and memorize some of his (raw) recipes – not everything is raw… all vegan though, which is great!
So today I ate the following:
- Green Smoothie (2 bananas, frozen blueberries, lettuce & sprouts with water)
- E3Live (1 tbsp) …. both before my workout
- Vega shake right after my workout (2 bananas, 2 scoops Berry Vega, blueberries, hemp powder, water)
- small bag of grapes
- nori rolls from Gopal Foods x 10
- 1 Vega bar
- Lemongrass herbal
- Green Smoothie # 3 (2 bananas, 1 head of spinach, blueberries with water)
- 2 raw bliss balls
- 2 chocolate maca rolls
So I ate quite a lot today, but I spaced it all out throughout the day; and I feel satisfied – recovering well from the workout. Post workout days are also very important, as they are the days that the body typically feels more sore.
