Sometimes the strongest cravings for food occur when you’re feeling your weakest emotionally….
When my father passed away, I was in shock and had no desire to eat during the first few weeks but as the shock wore off, very old patterns surfaced and I began to crave comfort foods. Old cooked comfort foods. Bread, chips, pub fries and strong cheese – a food we often ate during my childhood – were suddenly appealing to me. Of course, I didnt want to give in to these cravings and sabotage my whole lifestyle just for a temporary fix. I knew that eating these foods wouldnt relieve the pain anyway, and I really couldn’t handle more guilt. I am very familiar with emotional eating (long story/years back) and fully aware that emotional eating can quickly become a habit. And, like all habits, difficult to break.
So in the haze of grief, I somehow made sure to have easy raw comfort foods on hand for quick access. Thankfully I had a few loaves of Patti’s Essene bread tucked away in the freezer (delicious dipped in flax oil & Himalayan salt or as a quick tomato-avocado sandwich) which really helped me through this period. I also had my share of avocados, raw truffles(Wild Oat) and strangely enough, nori sheets to nibble on. I began drinking herbal teas (first time in years) and had no interest in wheatgrass, green smoothies or green juice until just recently. E3live, bee pollen and chlorella tablets have been staples throughout and a bridge in bringing me back to my greens…
