Late Saturday night Natasha & Mischa were on their way home from a family gathering, when Natasha thought she’d try her hand at some stunt riding on a kids push scooter (not exactly the way she told the story, but my interpretation of things;) and she had the misfortune of falling and breaking her leg in two places.

Unfortunately Natasha is now in quite a bit of pain and discomfort, and much to her regret we’ve had to cancel a few dates for her book tour, and a workshop scheduled for this coming Saturday. I’m sure Natasha will persevere and heal herself quickly – certainly her diet and lifestyle will help her to rebuild and repair the broken bones, and to nourish her body with the best possible healing resources to help get her back on her feet.

In the coming days, weeks, and months, we’ll be taking period video clips to share here on the blog to chronicle her journey… enjoy and stay tuned for more to come…

Book Launch & Signing!

simplyraw_cover-update1

It’s been awhile since I’ve last blogged, but wow, there’s lots of excitement going on and I’m having  so much fun in real life!  To start with, my book – after 2 years of writing – has finally hit the market. Yay!  It’s a real thrill to see it in local book stores including at Chapters and in my favorite store, The Singing Pebble Books on Main Street.  Market Organics, Rainbow Natural Food, and Natural Food Pantry will also be carrying it shortly, and I’ll be doing signings around town the next while before heading  out west on my book tour.  My book also hit the American market, and it’s truly a pleasure to get feedback from readers across Canada and the U.S.  Many thanks for all your encouragement and support. And, please keep those email coming in, I am so loving it.  :)

For those who missed it, my first book review (w/a snazzy picture) appeared both locally in the Ottawa Citizen, and nation wide in the National Post.   Not a bad review although the article was in the food section and described as a raw “cookbook “- something it definitely is not. The SimplyRaw Living Foods Detox Manual, published by Arsenal Pulp Press, is a tested & true detox program emphasizing fresh living plant foods.  It has recipes at the back of the book but they’re mostly light fare such as green smoothies, blended raw soups, and living puddings.  By the way, I am planning to finally finish writing that recipe book sometime next year, so that will definitely get me back in the kitchen – something my deprived hubby will be elated about no doubt!  :)

Of course, we’re also thrilled about the launch & signing of my book this coming Thursday, April 23 (7-9pm)  at the beautiful Nicholas Hoare Book Store, on 419 Sussex Drive.  (7-9pm)  We’ll be showing a fun slide show and serving tasty raw vegan appetizers, truffles and kombucha.  We hope to see you there!   Oh, and don’t forget about the potluck on Friday night!

“The SimplyRaw Living Foods Detox Manual” is finally complete and in my hands at last! What an emotional week it’s been! I am overjoyed and so pleased with the fabulous look (& content!) of the book.  Arsenal Pulp Press has done a excellent job with the design, layout and editing, and it feels great to have such a professionally produced version of the manual after all this time!

As Mark mentioned, The SimplyRaw Living Foods Detox Manual has been a two-and-a-half year writing project based on feedback from thousands of clients who have gone through our detox sessions here in Ottawa. The manual originally started with six sheets of paper and a pilot group of five very courageous detox test pilots. With ongoing tweaking, writing and detox groups over the years, the manual evolved into a 180-page comprehensive guide on how (& why) to detoxify the body through raw and living plant foods. It also has some simple and delicious recipes. The results are amazing: increased energy, improved digestion, effortless weight loss, better sleep, lower cholesterol, and radiant skin are but a few of the rewarding benefits when completing the program.

So, I’ve just come back from the Singing Pebble Book Store to check out my books on the shelf after a very thoughtful friend tipped me off last night. (Thanks Cecile!) We weren’t expecting the books to appear in the stores until April, so I had to I had to see it to believe it!  It sure felt great to see my books in the raw section of my favorite book store!  Apparently my friend purchased her copy of the detox book within 3 minutes of them going out on the shelves.  Hopefully this is just the beginning! :)

I hope to see you at tonight’s potluck — and the book launch next month!

Detox Hot off the Press

Today Natasha’s new book finally arrived at our doorstep, and after many years of hard work Natasha can finally breathe a sign or relief at seeing all of her hard work materialize into a physical manifestation.

Behold a labour of love:

nat-detoxboox-003

The new book really is stunning!  Arsenal Pulp Press have done a wonderful job with the design, layout, and packaging of the content; and also helping Natasha to restructure the book for a smoother flow of information.  The content is incredibly rich, being based on feedback from detox group participants from over 2-years of classes.

The book now takes the detox to a whole new level – with many improvements to the content and structure of the program.  Be the first to experience the new & improved program, and get your hands on the new book before it hits the book stores (expect the new book to appear in book stores by mid-April), and join the next SimplyRaw Detox program, starting Sunday March 22nd.  You can also start the program anytime you want with Natasha’s personalized one-on-one detox coaching support.

Happy reading!

Wigmore videos

Below is an interview of my new little friend, Eden, 5 year old raw foodist and darling entertainer.

Spontaneous clip by Elena – at the wheatgrass juicer, drinking one of my rather long wheatgrass shots!

Another gorgeous day in Puerto Rico, and I am so enjoying my stay here.  The pace is very relaxing -I’ve just come back from a lovely long walk, stretch and swim on the beach, and boy, could I get used to this!  :)   Many friends back home have been cautioning me about the cold temperatures there so I’ve been doing my best to collect copious quantities of vitamin D to keep me going the next while.  I must confess, I can be rather gluttonous when it comes to sun (& wheatgrass) consumption, and by the color of my skin, it looks as though I’ve collected enough D for the population of Ottawa!

Time is passing too quickly despite the laid back beach atmosphere.  I’ve been meeting many interesting people from all over the world including the U.S., Canada, Britain, France, Puerto Rico, Germany, the Ukraine, and Norway.  I also befriended sweet little Eden, my spirited little neighbour and 5 year old raw foodist.  Eden is a precious fairy-like girl with long blond ringlets and who brightens up my days with her delightful personality and smile.  Most mornings she can be heard belting out songs with her very soulful voice.

wigmore09-488

I was fortunate to spend some time with Eden the other night when she came over to visit.  As we colored our princess, we discussed life, the raw lifestyle and her favorite food which is currently Ann Wigmore’s protein nuggets, made with only 2 ingredients – sunflower and bananas.  Eden also sang and danced for me which was an absolute pleasure!  (video coming soon)

Being here

 wigmore09-372

I’m at the Ann Wigmore Institute one week now and I am having such a wonderful time meeting new and old friends again, eating life-giving foods, doing yoga, and of course, spending as much time as possible on the beach.

wigmore09-081

The Ann Wigmore Institute is located in Aguada, Puerto Rico.  It was founded in 1990 and carries on the work of the late Ann Wigmore, the pioneer in the use of wheatgrass juice and living foods for detoxifying and healing the body, mind, and spirit. The 2 week program includes informative classes throughout the day, accommodations, food prep workshops, morning yoga, 3 meals a day, Rejuvelac, wheatgrass juice, and unlimited amounts of Energy Soup.  It’s the best all-inclusive that you can offer your body, and many people come from around the world to detox and rejuvenate by consuming wheatgrass juice, Rejuvelac, and Ann Wigmore’s famous Energy soup.   I have been coming to this wonderful haven every winter for the last 5 (or is it 6?) years for r & r and a tune-up and plan to continue this tradition for years to come.

wigmore09-111

The weather has been in the high 80’s during the day, and we’ve been outside at every chance.  It feels good to take things at a slower pace and just breathe!  Yesterday, a few of us went on a beautiful horseback ride through the tropical forest, and along miles of sandy beach where we spotted 2 large iguanas about 5 feet long - one in the tree tops!

Raising Healthy Families

mischa-021As many of us move away from processed foods and towards a raw lifestyle, we start to feel the amazing health benefits associated with eating this way. Our energy level increases, digestion clears up, we shed that excess weight, our skin glows, and we’re so much happier. With this comes the realization that we also want our family to experience some of these benefits, and soon we begin to wonder (& often doubt) just how to get them on board with us.

Shifting the family to a healthier, natural diet can seem overwhelming and daunting at first. It’s hard enough changing our own diet, but how do we convert our picky eaters into fruit and vegetable lovers without the dinner table becoming a battle-field? It can be a real struggle to get family members to try anything new or healthy for that matter – especially if their taste buds have already been tainted with refined, cooked foods. And, as we all well know, ingrained habits are extremely difficult to break so the thought of changing our kid’s eating habits can feel like an insurmountable task. It is, however, possible.

The key is to start small. Take incremental “baby” steps, and focus on one change at a time. Stick with it, be patient and keep trying. Just because your child does not like something the first time, doesn’t mean that they won’t like it eventually. Explain to your family why it is so important to eat well, and be sure to set a good example as children often pick up their parents habits. If you don’t eat well, chances are your kids won’t either.

Smoothies are an ideal way of boosting vital nutrients into our kids diets. Most children prefer fruit over vegetables, so making fruit smoothies with a handful of leafy greens slipped in can be the perfect solution for getting them to eat more fresh organic produce. Over time, you can add more greens and less fruit. You can even add a little bit of flax oil, soaked chia seeds, or a touch of E3live but don’t change the original taste, texture, and appearance too quickly otherwise your little ones will notice and most likely refuse to drink that pulpy smoothie. Always transition them gently and comfortably, and remember that even small changes can make an enormous difference in your family’s health.

My son has always been an extremely picky eater, so you can only imagine my shock when I discovered that he didn’t take to eating sprouts. Being a sprout lover since the 80’s, I refused to accept this — so I began adding one lone sunflower sprout to every one of his meals. Yes, there was a lot of squirming and it took him forever to eat that little sprout, but over time he got used to eating one, then two, then three, and now – well, as you can see in the video clip below, Mischa at 13 year old, is eating mouthfuls of sprouts at every meal. :)

I will be teaching a “Healthy Kids & Families” workshop sometime in May so stay tuned. In the meanwhile, keep feeding your beautiful children healthy vital foods, and above all, don’t give up. It might take time for your kids to come around but if you’re patient and persevere, they’ll be chewing mouthfuls of sprouts in no time!

  • 4 ozs. wheatgrass juice
  • glass of chia/flax pudding
  • 4 soaked brazil nuts

The release date for Natasha’s first book, “The SimplyRaw Living Foods Detox Program” published by Arsenal Pulp Press, is quickly approaching. No, it’s not a joke, on April 1, the new book hits the store shelves (it’s already available for pre-orders on Chapters and Amazon), and Natasha will be getting out to promote the book, talk about the living foods lifestyle, doing a real detox (not a detox-in-a-box), and how her program can help people to make lifestyle changes that last a lifetime.

Below is a quick sneak-peak interview with the Natasha about her book. Watch this space for more videos to come!

The next Group program begins March 22 – kickstart your spring by signing up for the SimplyRaw Detox Program! You can also start the program anytime you’re ready with private coaching support from Natasha.

Taking responsibility

There has never been a more critical time to take responsibility for our own health.  We’re living in a very unhealthy world full of toxins and chemicals, and millions of people are suffering from chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, autoimmune diseases,  alzheimer, cancer, heart disease, and a slew of other chronic health challenges. Many of these health problems are the result of our environment, however, the largest cause of illness is improper diet. And if you’re eating what every other North American eats (packaged, processed and fast foods full of additives and nutrient robbing chemicals), your diet is most likely killing you.  In fact, the standard American diet (SAD) has killed more people than the plague.

In today’s fast-paced modern society, eating right is no longer a priority. Many children think that a balanced diet is a burger and fries with a piece of wilted iceburg in the middle, and very few eat green vegetables.  My son tells me that most kids at school eat subs, pizza, hot dogs, cold cuts, white bread, sugary desserts, candy, and soft drinks for lunch.  And then we wonder why our children can’t focus in class so we put them on pharmaceuticals to calm them down. … Modern living has also made us incredibly lazy (who has the time?), and very few of us prepare homemade meals anymore.  Based on our average diet and lack of exercise, it’s no wonder we’re getting fatter and sicker every day!

fatburger7Our love affair with high fat, “convenient” food has become part of our culture, and is unfortunately, now taking its toll. Not to be depressing but did you know that half of us will die of heart disease, and one in three will die of cancer?  Or that diet is probably the greatest single factor in the epidemic of cancer ? (Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine 2000)

If you want to live to a juicy ripe age free of disease, you need to take matters into your own hands.  I mean, how can you expect your body to function optimally if you’re still feeding it crap?   Studies indicate that many of our illnesses can be prevented if we all ate a better diet – one higher in fiber and lower in fat.  Studies also show that a diet high in dietary fiber can greatly reduce ones risk of various cancers and help lower blood cholesterol.  Fiber can prevent or treat other conditions such as diabetes, diverticulosis, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, hemorrhoids and obesity, and as an added benefit, high fiber foods can also help with weight control as they fill you up, yet are low in calories.

Eating more organic produce is the first step to health, and the closer the food is to its natural state (with minimal heating, salting and processing), the greater the health benefits. It’s simple.  If we want to be healthy, we have to take responsiblity for the foods that we eat.  We need to stop making excuses and begin to incorporate more fresh, natural foods and exercise into our daily lives.

Improving our diet can completely transform our lives.  It can positively impact our physical, mental and emotional well-being: better quality of sleep, more energy, stronger immune system, improved digestion, softer skin, clearer thinking, happier mood, lighter weight.  The list is endless.  When your cells are getting the highest levels of nutrition, your body naturally goes into balance and everything works more efficiently.   Make  health your priority from now on. Why wait until its too late?
